Giesel Smith

Giesel Smith CEO, Artistic Director, Instructor

Giesel Smith is an innovative dancer and choreographer with immeasurable experience in performing, teaching, competition and production. Giesel began dancing when she was five, at the Mullsano School of Dance in Brooklyn, New york.  As a shy and introverted girl, she developed a new found confidence through movement and creative expression. Her training began with tap, ballet, jazz, and progressed to pointe at the age of twelve.  Giesel was awarded a dance scholarship to attend the Mario Melodia Dance camp in Pittsburgh.
In 1978 her family relocated to Los Angeles, California where she continued her aspiration as a dancer.  She studied numerous disciplines od dancing including:

  • * Vaganova ballet technique

  • * Pointe and pas de deux with the Danse Alliance of Southern California American Ballet of California, Inc.

  • * Advanced Russian (Kirov) technique, under Maestro Vladimir Luppov at Debbie Reynolds Professional Studio.

  • * Jazz at Joe Tremaine Studio

Her talents were instrumental as a member of the Varsity Cheer/Song team at John Glenn High School for all four years.  Her team qualified and competed in several nationals, ultimately being awarded the title of National Champions in 1983.

Giesel was invited to become a professional cheer and song instructor for the National Cheer-leading Association (NCA).  She instead elected to work with her mentor Rey Lozano of U.S. Spirtil eaders.  The opportunity allowed her to travel abroad, teaching at summer camps, coaching and being contracted to choreograph competition routines.  In addition to being on the CSULB Cheer/Dance performance and competition team, she  continued her dance training at Cal State University of Long Beach.

Her broad interest in performance and teaching has lead Giesel to a variety of related fields including:

  • * Performer and entertainer for Disneyland in the Character Department.

  • * Aerobics Instructor for 24 Hour Nautilus Health Spa, Family Fitness Center, YMCA, South Gate Parks & Recreation and Norwalk Parks & Recreation.

  • * Hip Hop/Jazz Instructor for an after school program at William Orr Elementary.

The opening of Stepping Out, has given Giesel a platform to share her creative abilities.  She has produced unique Dance Recital Productions that have proven to be imaginative, inventive, artistic and entertaining.  From the vibrant, tasteful and age appropriate costumes, to the pleasing music selections, her shows have received rave reviews from parents and audiences.

Giesel’s natural gift for teaching has allowed her to motivate, inspire and touch the lives of countless students.

Testimonials

My girls have been at Stepping Out for 3 years now and we love it! The staff is friendly and the instructors have a great time with their students. This studio does not play favorites toward students on their competition teams as I've experienced elsewhere. They treat ALL students and parents equally! Their rates are lower then most, their recital information with additional costs are outlined clearly in writing and we choose to participate or opt out. Costume charges are 1/2 the cost of the other studios and they even offer fundraisers to help parents out. If you're looking for a good family environment and great dance instruction, I HIGHLY recommend Stepping Out! Pros: Classes aren't overcrowded, Instructors are experienced, facility even has a dancewear boutique, prices are fair.

We had our "First Dance" lesson before our wedding at Stepping Out.  I totally have two left feet, but Giesel, the teacher, was super-encouraging and SO nice.  She broke down the beat to the song we chose and showed us the steps and went over it with us over and over again.  Now my two left feet can waltz! Oh, and before our private lesson, we watched the little ones doing ballet--that was super-adorable too.
